When traveling to Japan I recommend traveling outside of the big cities and tourist attractions and experiencing some of the smaller towns scattered throughout the countryside. You will see a more "real" Japan in terms of people, places, festivals, food, ect... I was fortunate enough to spend 2 1/2 years in a small town on the southern island of Kyushu, in Fukuoka prefecture. Although there is a lot of excitement in the big cities, the lasting memories are all from the small town experiences. So don't be affraid to get off the train in a place where you know nothing about. The people are always friendly and a smile will get you a long way.
